COLLEGIATE principal Elizabeth Armstrong has been named as the new principal designate of the new Enniskillen Royal Grammar School which, from September, will replace the existing Portora and Collegiate schools.

The landmark appointment was made on Friday and officially announced by the interim board of bovernors for the new school on Monday. In a statement released to the Herald the Board a spokesman from the board said:

“The interim board of governors of Enniskillen Royal Grammar School are pleased to announce that Miss Elizabeth Armstrong has been appointed as the Principal Designate of the new school. Miss Armstrong is currently the Principal of Enniskillen Collegiate Grammar School. The Interim Board of Governors look forward to working with Miss Armstrong to establish and develop Enniskillen Royal Grammar School into a centre of academic excellence.”

It is believed that Ms Armstrong was one of three final candidates shortlisted for the position, with the interviews conducted by an equal spread of board members from both schools. It is thought that Portora principal Neil Morton was also one of the final three in the running.

The new school will come into effect on September 1, 2016, with the year eight intake, both boys and girls, being taught on the Collegiate site. The school will admit 130 pupils into year 8 and will have an enrolment of 990 pupils for 2016/2017. The long-term enrolment for the school has been set at 900 pupils. The design of the new school uniform is currently being discussed and at this stage it is believed no decision has been taken on the location of a new build for the school.

Speaking this week following her appointment Miss Armstrong expressed her hopes for the new school

“I am looking forward to working with the interim board of governors to build a strong and purposeful school community of staff, pupils and parents of Enniskillen Royal Grammar School so that together in a spirit of positive partnership we make Enniskillen Royal Grammar School the centre of excellence our young people and community deserve.

“Together going forward we will be working hard too with the relevant authorities to ensure that they meet their responsibilities in respect of the new build and facilities for our young people as soon as possible.”

The 53-year-old started off her teaching career at Belfast Royal Academy in 1986, a large co-educational voluntary grammar school in the city, where she taught modern languages and during her time was appointed as a senior teacher at the school.
