THE PEOPLE of Belcoo have been left devastated once again following the tragic death of 21-year-old student Anthony Mulvey in a car crash on Sunday afternoon.
The one vehicle road traffic collision took place on the Enniskillen to Sligo Road, close to Mullaghdun and a police spokesman confirmed that a light green coloured Peugeot 306 left the road some time between 12.20pm and 12.45pm.
Anthony, a former pupil of St Michael’s College, was a fourth year Pharmacy student at Queen’s University, Belfast and also worked at Dunnes Stores in Enniskillen. He is the beloved son of Ann and Anthony and dearly loved brother of Patrick and Matthew.
Paying a heartfelt tribute, Anthony’s best friend Matthew Mulligan recalled “an absolute gentleman”.
“Anthony had it all, he was smart, hard working, carried me through school half of the time, he was top in his year in his pharmacy course out of 120 people and he didn’t even tell anyone which shows how genuine and modest he was.
“He had a loving relationship with his girlfriend Gemma (Maguire) and meant the world to her. He was one of the funniest lads I’ve ever known, kind and an absolute gentleman to everyone.
“He will be missed dearly by all of his family and friends and the messages and posts about him have shown the extent that he was loved by everyone.
“He was the best friend I could have had and I’m just so lucky to have had him in my life,” he added.
Acting principal at St Michael’s College Mark Henry recalled Anthony as a diligent young student with a bright future.
“He’s a recent past pupil of the school so everyone here remembers Anthony. You can imagine how shocked we were on Sunday when we heard the news and how sad the school was on Monday. Having spoken to the teachers that have taught Anthony most recently, the words that keep coming up are that he was just a really solid, decent, reliable young man.
“He was really determined to do pharmacy, he really wanted to be a pharmacist and he just set about achieving that goal with a really quiet determination and hard work and he got there, he got his reward. The brothers; Patrick who is a past pupil and Matthew who is currently here, they’re all cut from the same cloth, they’re all solid, reliable young men and it’s just very, very sad.”
He added: “Poor Belcoo has been hit time and time again with these tragedies and it’s very hard for a community to keep taking that, it’s desperate.”
A spokesman for Belcoo GAA club, where Anthony played underage footballer as a defender expressed sympathies:
“The club extends it’s deepest sympathy to the Mulvey family on the tragic and untimely passing of young Anthony yesterday afternoon. We ask our members to keep his parents Ann and Anthony and two brothers Patrick and Matthew in your thoughts and prayers at this difficult time.”
A spokesman for the Oisin McGrath Foundation in Belcoo said:
“There are just no words to say how devastated we are for the Mulvey and Warnock families on the tragic and sudden loss of Anthony. We send all our love, prayers and support especially to his parents Ann and Anthony and his brothers Patrick and Matthew. Thinking also of all Anthony’s young friends and all our young people at this devastating time. Another bright star gone much too soon.”
Caoimhe MacNeill, President of Queen’s University Students’ Union added: “We are deeply saddened to hear of the death of Anthony Mulvey, one of our Pharmacy students. Our thoughts are with Anthony’s family and friends at this difficult time. Yet another life cut far too short.
“We’re here to offer support to all those affected and would encourage any student who is struggling to come to terms with what has happened and would like to talk to someone to contact the Queen’s Counselling service, CareCall on 0808 800 0016 (24 hr Freephone) or by emailingqubstudents@carecallwellbeing.com”
The funeral mass for Anthony Mulvey took place on Wednesday at 11am at St Patrick’s Church, Killinagh, Blacklion.
Police investigating the incident are appealing for anyone who was travelling on the Sligo Road on Sunday at the time and who noticed the green Peugeot car to contact police in Enniskillen on 101.
