A NEW ambulance station on the site of the old Erne Hospital has moved a step closer.
At last week’s meeting of the council’s Planning Committee an application for the new build was approved and the new structure would replace the temporary accomodation in place since the Erne closed its doors in June 2012.
The application is for a single storey building for Northern Ireland Ambulance Service. The building will replace the temporary structure located to the immediate south of the site which is on part of the footprint of the now demolished hospital.
According to the application the proposed building is ‘acceptable in design terms and meets policy requirements for this site’.
Transport NI is content with the proposed new station to the traffic generated by this facility and parking and servicing arrangements for the use. However, Transport NI has commented that the Council should consider “the piecemeal development of the overall site and the potential intensification of traffic at peak times, particularly in the mornings with regards to the new college (South West College).”
Due to the proposed relocation of South West College to a portion of the former Erne site Transport NI has expressed a desire to “future proof” the site in terms of access arrangements and have advised that the site should provide drawings which would include a indicative layout of a roundabout in case a roundabout is required in the future.
It is believed work on the site will start this some time this year, following the approval from planning for the new facility.
