THE UNION representing the largest number of health workers here could have its members on strike as early as March.
In opposition to what the union said were issues surrounding pay increases, the cuts to health and job security, UNISON is to ballot around 2,000 members in its Fermanagh and Omagh branch.
The health union will be expecting a majority to vote ‘yes’ to strike action – and it is understood that this could take place as early March.
The strike would be expected to last a minimum off 24 hours – and is unlikely to affect emergency services. Other services at the South West Acute Hospital, however, are likely to be hit.
A strike scheduled for tomorrow by GMB, involving local ambulance staff was suspended on Tuesday evening. The GMB union strike was in relation to what the union says is the government’s refusal to award a one per cent pay rise to all NHS staff as recommended by the NHS pay review body (PRB).
A GMB spokesman said: “GMB is pleased that after a week of talks we have secured a new offer. This enables us to suspend the strike action while we consult with our members on whether they wish to accept the offer or not.”
On the upcoming ballot, UNISON statement read: “In the coming weeks UNISON will be balloting our members for strike action in Spring 2015. The ballot for strike action comes as a result of the paltry 1% pay offer to our members in the NHS, the continuing savage cuts in health, job security and the safe levels of service provision.
“Please attend your workplace meetings, watch notice boards, social media and information stalls when they appear in your workplaces. As a branch we would recommend that our members vote YES. UNISON will be issuing guidance and providing support about the practicalities of a strike and deal with any issues or concerns that you might have. Don’t be afraid to have this conversation with us now if your have any reservations or worries.”
A Western Trust spokesman said that the trust did not wish to comment.
