FOR many Fermanagh people it’s the main road to Belfast, but for Clabby residents the main Tempo to Fivemiletown road – and the high number of speeding motorists who use it – is a danger to their children.
Father-of-three Jason Williams lives on the main Clabby Road, which currently has a 40mph speed zone, but he and other residents believe it is only a matter of time there is a serious injury or death because of speed.
“It is a main road with around 20 houses on this stretch of road. There are no speed humps as its a 40mph zone, which we as residents think should be 30mph.
“There is a danger of one of our children being seriously injured or worse .There is all sorts of traffic going over the 40mph limit even HGV lorries. Any of the vehicles doing these speeds have no chance of stopping if a child slips onto the road.
“There are around 20 children who live on this stretch of road. All the residents want is the speed to be reduced and speed humps put down.”
The residents have brought their concerns to the Department for Regional Development (DRD) and to the police, but have become frustrated by the responses they have received.
“The current situation is that they won’t reduce the speed limit on the road as it’s the main road through Clabby to Tempo. I have been told to contact the PSNI with my concerns, which I have, but with no joy.”
A survey was conducted by DRD on the speed of traffic in the area from July 11 through to July 19 to determine the feasibility of changing from 40mph to 30mph restrictions, but a spokesman from DRD confirmed there were no plans to do so at present.
“Transport NI received a request from residents of Tempo Road, Clabby to reduce the speed limit on the road from 40mph to 30mph.
“The Department conducted a speed survey and the results indicated that approximately 86% of vehicles travelled at or below 40mph. The average speed was 34.7mph.
“As the road is currently developed only on one side and the average speeds are above the level where a 30mph speed limit can be provided. The assessment is that a 40mph speed limit is still appropriate for this section of road.
“The Department has no plans to introduce a 30mph limit at this location at present, however, we have asked PSNI Roads Policing to continue to undertake enforcement action on the road.”
