Having withdrawn from the final phase of GB squad trials over the recent Easter weekend due to illness, Enniskillen’s Beci Humphreys had disappointingly written off her hopes of making the GB team for the 2014 World Championships in August.
She was advised that nothing short of a victory at the prestigious Ghent International Regatta would convince the selectors to consider otherwise.
However, Beci’s incredible determination helped to propel her to the Gold medal at this major event in the rowing diary, giving GB squad selectors some considerable food for thought!
In a strong Final line up in the Lightweight Women’s Senior Scull event she beat fellow GB hopeful Fran Rawlins of the Leander Club to the top of the podium.
The victory for Beci comes just a week after taking a most creditable bronze in the Final of the Women’s Open Elite Challenge at the Wallingford Regatta, which was won by Olympic Silver medallist Debbie Flood.
Beci rows for the Tideway Scullers club, based in Chiswick, and is a club colleague of Northern Ireland’s Alan Campbell. She is looking forward to a busy summer with some major Regatta’s including Henley.
