THREE roads that formed part of the recently installed Cherrymount Link, connecting the Irvinestown road with the Tempo Road, and exiting on to the Dublin Road have been upgraded.
Last month, DRD Roads Service informed Fermanagh District Council it intended to classify the new Cherrymount Link Road, Wickham Place and part of Tempo Road as the ‘A32’ road.
Members did not raise objections, but they requested clarification of the remaining section of road, the part that runs from the Cherrymount Roundabout to Forthill Street.
A DRD spokesperson, responding to a Herald query, stated: “This is an extension to one of the key transport corridors as per the Regional Strategic Transport Network Transport Plan 2015.”
She conformed that the classification for the Cherrymount Roundabout – Forthill Street section remained as ‘A32’.
Asked if this ‘A’ classification would give an enhanced status to the other three sections of road, the spokesman stated: “When the section of B80 from Dublin Road to the roundabout at the Link Road was reclassified as ‘A32’, it was also designated as a Trunk Road (not all A class roads are Trunk roads).
“This leaves it eligible for Trunk Road structural funding for future maintenance. There is no difference to the funding stream for non-trunk ‘A’ roads and ‘B’ class roads.”
