POLICE are still trying to confirm the identity of a man whose body was discovered by an angler on Monday morning in Lower Lough Erne, close to the lock gates at Portora, just off the Shore Road, Enniskillen.
The body is thought to be that of a local man, 34-year old Martin Convey who lived at Windmill Mews, Enniskillen.
It is believed that the PSNI have spoken to one family member, acting on items of identification found on the body.
However, they are taking the official line and are awaiting further post-mortem tests, such as blood samples, before they will confirm the man’s identity.
The emergency services were called and the body recovered following a call from the Warden’s office at 11.30 on Monday morning of a body spotted floating in the water.
It is believed the body had been in the water for some time with the result that police were unable initially to indicate gender and age.
A post mortem that was subsequently carried out confirmed the body was that of a male.
A PSNI spokesman said yesterday, Monday, they were not treating the death as suspicious.
That being the case, they could not divulge any more information.
“As the death is not being treated as suspicious, there is no investigative need to release any further details.”
Normally, when a body is discovered, it follows a ‘missing person’ appeal.
It is not thought this was the case here.
We did try to contact the family, but no one was available.
Fermanagh has had two ‘missing persons’ appeals in recent weeks, a man and a woman, but their last sightings were in Cornwall and Amsterdam.
