FERMANAGH ladies are a force to be reckoned with.

They won this year’s Ulster title and came within seconds, literally, of reaching the All-Ireland final, the ball going over the bar as the gong sounded to hand Tipperary an unlikely victory.

Key to Fermanagh’s great effort was Lisnaskea sharpshooter, Sharon Little, voted Player of the Match in the Ulster final.

“It was heartbreaking. We haven’t really met as a squad since the Tipp match, with people having club games, but it’s still heartbreaking to think about it.”

But, on the plus side, she agreed that, county-wise, things had otherwise gone well. And, she agreed that if the men had achieved the same degree of success, the whole county would take notice.

She can speak with some authority for her two brothers, Aidy and Mark played for the county and, of course, her older sister, Caroline plays alongside her for club and county.

Sharon (24) has been playing ladies football for the past 10 years, at full-forward for the Emmetts and half-forward for the county.

And, she clearly enjoys the game.

“It’s good fun, especially playing for the county because of the young ones coming up, and we are seeing new faces all the time.”

So, what about Lisnaskea, her own club side?

“We’re not as strong as we used to be”, she admitted. “We lost a lot of players last year, and we had 9 or 10 U16s playing for us this year, so we’re getting them into the squad and getting used to playing against the likes of Newtown and Kinawley.”

The future then, Sharon sees as bright, and she is more than happy with life generally.

She works in Toytown in Enniskillen, which she described as, ‘a good place to work’.
