WITH less than a month to go before Fermanagh hosts the National Coarse Fishing Federation of Ireland’s World Championships for Boat Fishing with Lures in Enniskillen, the organisers are now expecting a record number of teams.
The event runs in the week beginning Monday, 7th October.

A spokesman for the local organising committee told the Herald that the biggest-ever turnout was 13 last year in the Ukraine.

“But, as of Monday, 2nd September last, the NCFFI committee had already got a commitment to attend from at least 14 countries.”

Ukraine, the world champions, have just completed a six-day training session on the waters of Upper and Lower Lough Erne.

Other countries committed include England and France, who will fish the event for the first time, and South Africa, who will travel the greatest distance to take part.
During their training session last week, the six-man Ukranian caught 59 pike (over 50cm), the biggest of them, at 91cm was over 20lbs in weight!

They also caught 62 perch above the required size limit of 22cm, with the biggest being 32cm.

The championship headquarters will be in the Killyhevlin Hotel, although the event launch point will be at the Round ‘O’.

This will afford spectators on the banks of the River Erne around the town an excellent opportunity to witness these highly skilled anglers in action.

Team training will take place on Thursday and Friday, 10th and 11th October, with the main event on Saturday and Sunday, 12th and 13th.
