THERE WAS something in the air in Fermanagh last week, and even the unborn wanted a glimpse.
Ten babies were born at the South West Acute Hospital – that’s one for every G8 leader plus European heavyweights Herman Van Rompuy and Jose Manuel Barroso – but, there’s no signs of any Vladamirs or Baracks just yet.
Included in the ten were locals Charlene and Kieran Farmer, and their daughter Zoe; Graeme and Katherine Sowden from Lisnaskea had their child Lea; while Elaine Clarke and Bill Hackett welcomed Maddison to the world.
Each parent praised the work of the hospital, while Mr Joe Lusby, deputy chief executive of the Western Trust described how the plans in place over the G8 summit with regards to maternity wards ‘worked beautifully’.
He went on: “Bear in mind that the Northern Ireland ambulance service had additional services in the county. They had deployed their ambulances and emergency response vehicles strategically throughout the county. So that , god forbid, a mum got into difficulty, there always was that resource.
He added: “In addition to that we had an air ambulance helicopter based in the county, and it was very quickly agreed from the outset, that if there was an emergency in the county and in some event an ambulance was not able to get to a patient, an air ambulance would have been used.”
But as for any signs of a Barack or David among the bunch?“Not that we know of,” he laughed
