EIGHT leaders, eight countries; eight different ice creams.

At least that’s how it’s seen at a shop in Enniskillen.

Lilley’s Centra, conveniently placed on the so-called ‘G8 road’ (Shore Road to me and you), makes its own gelato in-store – and, in celebration of the G8 coming to the Lough Erne Resort, store owner, Una Lilley and staff have rustled up a gelato for each of the leaders.

“When the G8 was announced for the Lough Erne my first thought was great we have 8 Napolis (gelato display trays) – so, eight gelatos for eight leaders,” explained Una.

Time was then spent researching what each leader liked and disliked  – which proved more difficult than expected – so where the information was not available, Una and company adapted desserts linked to each country.

“We collated our list and then got to work on creating the flavours checking with our suppliers in Italy to see if they could help us recreate some of the flavours we wanted to achieve and then for those that they couldn’t help us with we had to invent a recipe ourselves,” added Una.

And, over the past four weeks, two leaders’ gelatos were released, with Monday being the final two.

Included in the list of gelatos are David Cameron’s ‘Eton Mess’, Angela Merkel’s ‘Black Forest’ – and for Barack Obama, ‘Nuts about Obama’.

“It has created such a buzz in the store among the team and with our customers that it is fantastic!” said Una.

“As we get closer to the G8 we are having visits from the foreign delegations representatives and many nationalities are calling to take pictures of the caricatures and to sample the gelato.”

But, is the shop hoping for a visit?

“Yes we are and every leader will be most welcome if they decide to stop off! Can we lure in Obama? Yes we can!”
