AHEAD of the Ulster Championship Quarter Final tie between Fermanagh and Cavan at Brewster Park, PSNI Chief Inspector Alywin Barton has asked for patience from those heading to the game.

“We will have a lot of patrols about, we will be doing vehicle checkpoints, searching vehicles and we ask people to understand it’s not personal, its preparation for the G8 that coming next week and any Gaelic supporter who ends up getting stopped and searched please understand it’s simply preparation.”

Mr Barton was quick to reiterate that this work is for the G8 and it is not police specifically targeting GAA fans. He explained to the Herald that a traffic management plan will be in place ensuring a even flow of traffic through the county.

“Part of that has been sign posting particular communities so that we share the spread of traffic across the routes available as far as possible. Most importantly to try and ensure that people get into the game on time.”

One of the ways in which traffic will be managed will be through diversions for traffic through Derrylin via Lisnaskea.

“There would huge congestion on the West Bridge side of town if all that traffic came through Derrylin.

“There’s also a Church service in town, but that’s set against the backdrop that the normal business traffic will not be in the town.”

The match itself has a throw in of 2pm at Brewster Park and fans heading to the game are encouraged to avail of buses and consider the option of sharing cars.

The game will be shown on BBC, while it is also believed television news giant CNN will also cover at least some of the game as part of their G8 coverage.
