Ger Treacy, a key member of the Fermanagh management team, while respecting Meath’s great tradition, is as confident as the players that victory and a Division 3 final date in Croke Park are well within Fermanagh’s reach.
He was speaking in the wake of Meath’s thrashing of Antrim last Sunday.
“Yes, we were very surprised to see them in Division 3, and I suppose that, along with Monaghan, they were most people’s favourites to get out of the division, and that’s the way the league has fared, with Meath and Monaghan sitting, in a lot of people’s eyes, in pole position to get promotion.
“But, if somebody had said at the beginning of the year that Fermanagh would be at the top of the league with one game left, albeit with Meath, we would have taken that.”
And, Ger for one, suggests they are there on merit.
“We are very pleased at the way and with the effort that the players have put in over this past 4-6 months.
They have got themselves into a good position, both in terms of where they are at in the league programme, and in their physical well-being.
“The boys are in great physical shape, and we’re looking forward to gong down to Navan (this Sunday, 3pm). I see it as a great challenge and, also, excellent preparation for the championship in a couple of months’ time.”
The Fermanagh squad trained in Lisnaskea on Easter Monday night and, afterwards, Ger reported on, ‘a nice, good, tough session’.
“The boys are in good form and they’re really looking forward to the challenge that lies ahead. And, we’re expecting a lot of people from Fermanagh will be there.
The league is now at the stage where it’s knock-out football were, with every game you win, you’re putting yourself in a very strong position.
“If we win, we will get an additional game, a league final in Croke Park, and that will be the icing on the cake.”
