A CHAINSAW ATTACK on electricity poles – that power thousands of homes in the Derrylin area – has been condemned.
NIE have confirmed that damage caused to two poles carrying high voltage electricity poles were ‘chainsawed part way through’ – and left for strong winds, or such, to bring them down.
An NIE spokesperson commented: “The overhead line supported by these electricity poles supplies power to thousands of homes and businesses in the Derrylin and surrounding areas.”
Randal Gilbert, Duty Incident Manager at NIE, said, “Electricity is unforgiving and has the potential to kill anyone coming in contact with it – either those responsible for this deliberate damage or an unsuspecting member of the public. I cannot stress enough that this vandalism must stop immediately before someone is seriously injured, or indeed killed.
“The callous and premeditated nature of this vandalism meant that these cut poles could have fallen on an unsuspecting farmer, walker, passing vehicle or on livestock with potentially fatal consequences.”
