Claire Boles ‘honoured’ to be in Ireland Olympic squad

FERMANAGH’S Claire Boles has been named as a ‘travelling reserve’ for the Ireland Women’s Sevens squad that will compete at this summer’s Olympic Games in Paris.

The 12-player squad was confirmed on Monday afternoon with the Carrybridge player listed along with Amy Larn as one of the reserves.

26-year-old Boles may be called to action if any of the 12 players are injured or unavailable for any reason.

“I’m honoured to be named in the squad and delighted that as a team we came together.

“It’s been such hard work to get here and everyone is such a valued member.”

Boles has played with Ireland Sevens’ sides before, being selected for the Ireland Under 18 Sevens in 2016, and from there she joined the Ireland Sevens Programme and made her senior Sevens debut in Clermont in 2017.

Boles spent time in Australia in 2018, where she played in the University Sevens with Bond University, before winning three caps for Ireland during the 2019 Women’s Six Nations.

While she would have loved to have made the first-12 selection, the PhD student has a very positive mindset towards it all;

“You’re always aiming for that 12 spot but I’ve always been a team player. I’ve been in this position before at the past World Cup, so it’s nothing new to me. I know how to deal with it and prepare myself and prepare the team as best possible as if I am playing and just help everyone.”
