4G in most unlikely places!

4G mobile coverage for Boho

4G mobile coverage is set to be introduced to parts of Fermanagh

THE FUNNY thing about 4G is that it’s always in the last place you look.

Indeed you’d be forgiven for thinking that once the cities are out of the way, towns like Enniskillen would be the first in the county to receive full coverage.

But, it’s been quite the contrary here – with outlying areas such as Kinawley and Boho – being among the first to report a few bars of the precious signal.

4G is typically five times faster than a standard 3G network, allowing users to access apps and websites without a WiFi or landline Internet connection quicker than ever before.

The implementation of a 4G service is curious considering the lack of any mobile phone signal, or indeed limited mobile phone signal in some parts of the county.

Several months ago, this paper reported that Kinawley was among the first to receive 4G, with some parts of Enniskillen also benefiting.

The latest appears to be Boho – yes, Boho! – with locals reporting signs of 4G in the area in the last few weeks. Users in Irvinestown have also reported the service in the last few months.

Dessie McKenzie, of the Linnet Inn in Boho, admitted that it was ‘strange’ – but positive – that the likes of Boho were among the first in the county to get the service.

“People are only starting to realise that they can pick up 4G and the reason being that a lot of people are getting new handsets – and with the new handsets they’re getting the 4G sim.

“The phone signal in general in Boho is not good. If you’re on our street at the bar you can pick up 3G but once you disappear out of site of the pub the signal’s gone. And only at various points along the road – where you’d see people pulling over in their cars – does it come on again.

“It’s strange. If people realise that 4G is there – I think a lot of people who upgraded their sim cards would realise that they can pick it up.”
