Fermanagh couple conquer Austrian Ironman event

TWO members of the Enniskillen Lakelanders Swimming Club said they were “delighted to finish” a hugely competitive and challenging Ironman competition in Austria.

Jenny and Lee York, members of the Fermanagh club, said they were delighted to take part, with Jenny qualifying for the Women’s World Championships in Nice in September.

“Lee and I completed Ironman Kärnten-Klagenfurt, Austria on Sunday, June 16.

“The race started at 6.30am with pro athletes leading the way around a one-lap, 3.8km swim course,” said Jenny.

“This involved an out and back in the beautiful blue waters of Lake Wörthersee, concluding with a one kilometre murky canal swim. The water temperature was around 20 degrees so wetsuits were permitted.

“After stripping off our wetsuits in T1, we set out on two laps of a rolling but scenic 90km cycle, consisting of some steep climbs (elevation gain 1,700m) and speedy descents.

“The air temperature was low for this time of year at only 17 degrees and felt quite chilly when we got pelted by hailstones and heavy rain on the first lap,” she added.

The Ironman is one of the toughest events in athletics and sports and the Fermanagh pair was delighted to finish off their event in Austria in style.

“The sun came out as the day went by and we were well warmed by the time we got to the run. This took us out of the town of Klagenfurt towards Krumpendorf on a two-loop journey,” said Ms York.
