THERE HAS been a worrying spike in the number of rural crimes in recent week, especially along the border.
From the theft of irreplaceable church records at Derrylin, residents being threatened in their homes in Kesh, tools being stolen from a van parked in an Enniskillen town centre carpark or to burglaries in Bellanaleck.
As reports of crime came so did various warnings from a number local councillors for residents to exercise vigilance in protecting their property and acting proactively to minimise the threat of opportunistic crime.
In a bid to combat crime the PSNI Fermanagh and Omagh District Support team recently joined forces with the Garda Siochana as part of a cross-border burglary operation and across the region they have worked closely with the Garda conducting over 205 vehicle checkpoints, in the process seizing 15 vehicles and making 14 arrests as part of an ongoing crime prevention operation.
Inspector Russell Vogan said, “We have been running a number of targeted operations over the past number of weeks and will continue to do so in the run up to Christmas.
“Our overall aim is to keep people safe and bring more offenders before the courts. On a daily basis, police officers respond to calls for help from people who have been burgled, so we are very much aware of the effect these incidents can cause.”
