AMONG the young people selected by the BBC to meet President Barak Obama during his recent visit to London was 23-year old full time youth worker from Fermanagh, Caolan Faux.
Born right on the Fermanagh/Monaghan border, with his feet firmly planted in Roslea/Newtownbutler soil, it was perhaps fitting that he was the only one from the North, under the BBC project, to meet the president.
“There was another person from the north, but they were from another project. I was one of five from here and the UK”, he explained.
“I got picked because the BBC, when they were considering who to choose,, went for me because they thought, as a youth worker, I would have a good working knowledge of both communities.”
Based in Armagh City, Caolan covers south Armagh and, at present, works with young males.
“I love it. It’s very, very challenging, but it has big, big rewards.”
While he did not get to speak with Mr Obama, Caolan got sitting about two metres away from him at the London Townhall event.
“Because there were so many trying to jump in, I didn’t get any sort of conversation with him, but I thoroughly enjoyed the occasion. It was surreal, cool. It was awesome to meet him. He seemed like a top fellow.”
Caolan, a past pupil of St Michael’s College, is a son of Ciaran and Michelle Faux and a brother of Naoise and Oisin.
