ON Sunday last, family members representing three British Army soldiers killed in an IRA explosion while competing in the 1984 Sealink Classic, attended the unveiling of a plaque in their memory in the British Legion Hall, Enniskillen.
The project was pioneered by the South East Fermanagh Foundation (SEFF), a victims’ support based in Lisnaskea.
The date chosen, almost coincides with the date (18th May) that the soldiers’ car, which was booby trapped, exploded.
All three soldiers were fatally injured, two died at the scene and their colleague in October, 1984.
In addition to their families, those attending the unveiling included a retired doctor who tended the three at the scene, an ex fireman who was also present on that fateful day, and others who were on the scene.
Visitors included victims and survivors from across south-east Fermanagh, the First Minister, Arlene Foster, Tom Elliott, MP, Maurice Morrow MLA and the chief officer of the Victims and Survivors Service.
SEFF director Mr Donaldson said it had been ‘a difficult’ weekend for the families concerned.
He added: “We pray that they leave this weekend with a knowledge that very many people in County Fermanagh care about them and their welfare”.
