A DERRYGONNELLY man who stole Swiss rolls on two separate occasions has been given probation and order to repay the shops he took the sweet treats from.
Marc Quinn (23) of Mill Green, Derrygonnelly appeared at Enniskillen Magistrates Court on Monday charged with two counts of theft.
The court heard that on May 28 last year Quinn had been observed by staff at McBride’s Spar shop on the Sligo Road, Enniskillen shoplifting two Swiss rolls from the shop to the value of £5.80. He was identified using CCTV footage and admitted to the charged. The goods were not recovered.
The second incident took place at Lilley’s Centra in Enniskillen. On this occasion Quinn took a Swiss roll, and apple tart, and double cream to the value of £6.34, which he hid and left the store without paying for. Again, he was identified on CCTV and the goods were not recovered.
District Judge Nigel Broderick said Quinn “seems to have a penchant for Swiss rolls” and his defence solicitor Michael Fahy said he had a sweet tooth.
The court was told Quinn had relevant previous convictions and had spent a lot of 2015 in custody. Mr Fahy said he had no pending charges in the pipeline, which he hoped was a positive sign. He added Quinn had also since moved out of Enniskillen to Derrygonnelly.
District Judge Nigel Broderick said any theft was a serious matter and while the individual amounts may sound small for the owners of the stores they could mount up. He added “every theft has its context.”
Judge Broderick sentenced Quinn to 12 months probation, ordering him to undertake any treatment programme put to him by probation. He also ordered Quinn to repay the value of the goods he had taken.
