Current Sinn Fein MLA Phil Flanagan left his Twitter followers scratching their heads once again over the weekend with another seemingly bizarre tweet.
If the Garrison man should have learned just one lesson over the course of his recent Twitter escapades, it should probably be that what you post online can come back to haunt you.
The defeat of his party colleague Padraig Mac Lochlainn in the Donegal constituency was one of the major surprises of the Republic’s general election.
In a tweet posted in the early hours of Sunday, Flanagan, who is himself hoping to be re-elected to Stormont this May, was clearly engrossed in the election results from the neighbouring county when he wrote: “I don’t have a hat. But I’ll get one and eat it if @PadraigMacL isn’t elected in Donegal. Over 4K votes from 3rd SF candidate in play.”
A reply from one follower urged the 31-year -old: “Buy a hat Phil !”
A further tweet later that night from Flanagan following the defeat of Mac Lochlainn was rather more subdued: “Great leadership shown by @PadraigMacL . . . Massive (temporary) loss for people of Donegal & Ireland”
Three puzzling questions are yet to be answered. Did Phil get a hat? If so, did he eat it? And where on earth is the tweet to prove it?
