Council to stump up £55,000 for 1916 events

ALMOST £55,000 of the ratepayers’ money is being spent in the Fermanagh and Omagh District commemorating both the 1916 Easter Rising and the Battle of the Somme.

A total of 65 events are to be held in the county in various communities in the Fermanagh and Omagh District. The allocation of funding is going towards projects ranging from £1,000 to Boho Heritage Association for an educational trip to Kilmainham Gaol, St Stephen’s Green,and other sites in Dublin on June 16 to £1,000 for Maguiresbridge LOL No1524’s remembrance and commemoration of the Battle of the Somme. This involves a lecture workshop and a dress up in period time clothing and is due to take place on July 31, 2016.

Including events that have already taken place in the district last year a total of 65 events totalling £51,687.30 have been recommended for funding approval, four of which have taken place or will take place within the financial year 2015/2016. £27,273.80 of this money is for projects in Fermanagh or organised by Fermanagh organisations.

The report from the Grants Award Panel was brought to a meeting of the Regeneration and Community Committee in Omagh on Tuesday night for approval, with a total spend of £54,836.30 stated as the total budget.

£46,000 of this comes from an allocation for ‘Remembering and Commemorating 2016/2017’, £3,149 is from the 2015/2016 Arts and Culture Budget, with an over commitment figure given of £5,687.30.

The report states that “in all cases, funding is conditional on the group having completed spend within a specified timeframe. Additionally funding will be conditional on meeting any specific requirements related to the project.”
