IN RESPONSE to requests from local residents and elected representatives speed limits are set to change on two main roads into Enniskillen.
In proposals put forward by Transport NI the 50mph zone on the Lough Shore Road at Silverhill is due to be extended, along with the 40mph zone on the Sligo Road past the Silver Swallow pub.
PSNI have been consulted and are in agreement, with work set to be complete by the summer.
One local Silverhill Manor resident welcomed the proposed speed limit change for the Lough Shore Road, which will extend the 50mph past the entrance to the housing development.
“I live in Silverhill Manor and at times when you’re turning onto the main road you can be taking your life in your hands. Traffic comes very fast around the corner and can at times be forced to brake sharply. Hopefully by extending the 50 it will make it safer. There have been a few near misses that I know of and ideally it would be a 40 rather than a 50.”
Enniskillen councillor Keith Elliott noted a number of accidents on the Sligo Road and welcomed any decrease in the speed limit.
“With regards to the speed limit, especially on the Sligo Road there have been quite a number of accidents in the vicinity of the Silver Swallow pub, there have been a number of accidents over the last couple of years at that junction so I imagine that has been taken into account. In general I would be encouraging everyone to obey the speed limits. At the end of the day we all like to get there as safe as possible, whether you’re on foot or in the car.”
Mr Elliott believes that a number of recent housing developments on both roads has necessitated the change in speed limits.
“You can clearly see more people further out the road so obviously any reduction in the speed limits on the outskirts of the town is good news. I would welcome it, I think it’s a good idea and to be honest if they reduced it to 40 from 50mph it would be even better.”
Transport NI confirmed that the proposals on the Sligo Road and Lough Shore Road are under consideration and were prompted by requests from elected representatives and local residents.
A spokesman for Transport NI confirmed: “Consultation in the form of a mail drop to all properties with direct access onto the stretch of road directly affected by these proposals has been carried out.
“The proposals are now being brought forward for kegislation with the agreement of PSNI traffic management, this process normally takes about six months to complete.”
The cost for the work is estimated to be less than £500.
