PSNI to keep roads unit in Fermanagh

Police in Enniskillen are searching for hit and run suspect.

The PSNI has confirmed that its roads policing unit is being retained in Enniskillen.

Assistant Chief Constable Alan Todd told the Fermanagh Herald that the unit would remain in place following a period of consultation and a review of operations within the Fermanagh and Omagh District.

He said: “The PSNI has reviewed a wide range of departments and functions.

Throughout this process consideration has been given to the demands that are placed on policing functions right across Northern Ireland and how these services can be structured to meet the needs of communities.

“The Road Policing Units will remain in Enniskillen and Omagh following consultation and representations, and will be staffed to a level to allow them to perform wider functions when required.

The enhanced unit will increase in number by 50%.

Road Education Officers will continue to deliver their service, working from within Roads Policing Units.

SDLP councillor Ritchie McPhillips said the community would be reassured by the news:

“While we had feared that the service might be downgraded, it is reassuring to hear that this service is not being taken out of the county at a time when so many other resources are being moved away from Fermanagh.

Given the number of road tragedies any help to prevent this in the form of visible policing has to be a welcome development,” he added.
