THE annual Galloon New Year’s Day charity swim came up to the mark, with some 35 bravehearts testing the icy waters off Galloon Jetty at 1pm.

Daniel O’Keefe, one of the participants, expects this year’s chosen charity, Marie Curie to benefit to the tune of £2,000-£3,000.

“It went very well considering we were missing a few. We had a lot of children taking part, but there was still a good enough age spread. The water was cold all right, but it didn’t deter anybody.”

Daniel, his father, his uncle Finbarr and his children braved the waters along with Barry King whose late father, Pat King did the swim last year, with the late Arthur Maguire doing the countdown. Both were much-like individuals and they were not forgotten this time around.
Afterwards, Chapmans Bar (An Chead Chumann) provided soup and sandwiches and donated a bottle of brandy.
