Stray ponies are spared death sentence

Five Shetland Ponies found in the Brookeborough area in September have been saved from being put down thanks to a  horse sanctuary in Co Louth.

There had been a “strong possibility” the animals would be put down, but the people at Holly’s Horse Haven, located in the village of Omeath.
The story initially came to light in Enniskillen Magistrates Court on Wednesday.

A police officer confirmed that five Shetland Ponies were found in the Corlough area of Brookeborough on September 15 at 1.50pm. Checks were made in regards to the ownership of the animals and  local farmers were spoken to, but drew a blank.

Elaine Duffy, one of the founders of Holly’s Horse Haven told the Herald that the animals have been at the sanctuary for two weeks after being taken in from a holding centre and were now safe.

Ms Duffy admitted there had previously been a “strong possibility” the animals would be put down, but now that the sanctuary has stepped in the animals are safe.

She added: “It’s a happy end to a wee story, well it will be when we find them homes.”
