Mourners at the funeral of Damian McGovern who died following an accident involving a saw as he worked at a house at Ely Lodge near Enniskillen heard of his tireless work for the community in Derrygonnelly at today’s funeral.
Parish priest Fr Jimmy McPhilips told mourners that since Mr McGovern’s death, the community had been forced to recognise “some very hard realities in life”.
“We have been forcefully reminded that life is not fair, that sometimes people die far too young, and far too tragic,” he said.
Describing Mr McGovern as “a man of hope”, Fr McPhilips said aside from being a family man, he was a friend, community man, dedicated GAA man, the local undertaker, a Church reader, a Eucharistic minister and would bring also bring Holy Communion to the sick and house-bound.
“Damy McGovern was certainly the type of guy whom others could lean on – how often was he the strength, the rock, the comfort, the enthusiasm, the motivator that others needed,” he said.
As a mark of respect, Fermanagh County Board postponed Sunday’s senior county final between Derrygonnelly and Roslea Shamrocks at Brewster Park.
Arriving at St Patrick’s Church, club members formed a guard of honour for Mr McGovern’s remains and his coffin was draped in club colours.
He is survived by his wife Leanne and their four children, Gavin, Ryan, Ronan and Niamh.
