THERE was excitement in the county this morning as HRH Duke of Kent arrived in Fermanagh for a two day visit.

Greeted to the county by Minister Arlene Foster and accompanied by the Lord Lieutenant of County Fermanagh, Viscount Brookeborough, the Duke of Kent had a packed schedule ahead stopping off first at the new children’s hospice Horizon West.

During his time at the hospice the Duke watched staff and children creating a piece of artwork entitled SOLACE and took a guided tour around the new facilities including the multi-sensory room.

Thanking the Duke of Kent for officially opening Horizon West and contributing to the art project, Heather Weir, Chief Executive of Northern Ireland Hospice said, “Families when first faced with the harsh realities experience the worst, but in hospice they find the best. First class delivery of children’s palliative care is life changing.

“The art feature when completed will be a lasting reminder to everyone who sees it that hospice care is a journey of the most specialist and most loving care possible. It will also remind us of your visit today and for marking the official opening of Horizon West – a new children’s hospice in Fermanagh and Tyrone.”

From there the Duke of Kent then travelled to ARC Healthy Living Centre in Irvinestown, where he met the ARC directors, as well as managers and participants of crucial projects such as the CHERISH Surestart programme.

ARC Chief Executive Jenny Irvine said, “Everyone who comes through the doors at ARC is a VIP, but today we’re delighted to welcome HRH The Duke of Kent. This opportunity allows us to highlight the transformational change which ARC has seen over the past 14 years, helping to improve the lives of many local people some of whom we are delighted to have here today.”
