WORK IS well underway at St Mary’s, Brollagh to allow young Derrygonnelly student Patrick Haren to join his classmates. The 12-year-old was diagnosed with severe ‘scoliosis’ as well as ‘kyphosis’ when he was young leaving him with a condition in which his spine is at an angle of over 100 rather than 180 degrees.
A previous student at Killyhommon Primary School, Boho, Patrick was unable to start school in September with his peers, due to his special requirements of a changing room, along with hand rails around the school and Department of Education funding cuts, but thanks to the perseverance of his mother Wendy, money came through from the department at the end of August to start the work at Brollagh.
Speaking this week the new principal at Brollagh Michael Quigley confirmed that construction work began a month ago and they are hopeful it will be completed by the start of November.
Mr Quigley explained: “Work is well under way on our new wash room, shower and changing facility.
This will provide appropriate provision to children to special educational needs.
The difference that this will make, is that it will ensure that the appropriate curriculum and support can be offered to any pupil that may have a specific need.
The work began 17th September and we are hopeful that it will be completed by the start of November. The standard of work and dedication of the builders, to date, has been first class.”
