Every season I like to do a piece on reshuffling your wardrobe for the season ahead. Although we are well into spring now and fast approaching summer I have left my own wardrobe reshuffle a lot later than usual partly because I have been busy and partly because the weather has been so up and down here in Fermanagh. Because you can never tell what way the weather will turn in our lovely county you have to be prepared for all eventualities.
From season to season you will often find trends come in and out of style. I rarely throw anything out because I know there is always a chance that it will come back into style again however there is only so much space in my wardrobe so I usually pack things away in vacuum bags in the attic or in a cupboard until I need them again.
Although it is fairly obvious that summer doesn’t call for thick Arran knit jumpers and heavy duffle coats please bear in mind that it does rain a lot here in Fermanagh and it’s not always twenty plus degrees so I wouldn’t pack away all of your jumpers and coats.
Always leave your wardrobe staples where they are as these are things you never know when you might need and are great for getting you out of sticky situations. Wardrobe staples are items that are easy to accessorise, go with anything and you know look good on you so therefore if you are in a rush and haven’t had time to plan your outfit you know you will look good.
Whether things are in style or not, if you love it leave it where it is. I have lots of items in my wardrobe that may not necessarily be on trend but by wearing them I feel that I stand out from the crowd by choosing my own style not just what everyone else is wearing.
There are items of clothing that are constantly in style perhaps once a passing trend but eventually worked their way into our wardrobes permanently. These are items such as your skinny jeans, leggings, lace shirts, pencil skirts and print cigarette trousers. These items are constantly in your wardrobe because they are the go to items. These are the items that you can either dress up or dress down depending on where you are going or what you are doing.
Don’t forget to leave plenty of room for your statement pieces such as your prints, party dresses, embellished tops, kimono jackets, maxi skirts and dresses, vest tops and t-shirts. Everyone has items that they use to help pull an outfit together such as belts, statement necklaces, cardigans, boleros and jackets so you will have to leave space somewhere for these type of items as well.
Sadly we only have so much wardrobe space so from time to time we all need to clear out and declutter. Bring anything that is still wearable to your local charity stores so that someone else can have enjoyment from your pre-loved items. Anything that is unwearable can be recycled at your local clothing bank or brought to a cash for clothes outlet. In this way everyone wins; the environment and free space in your wardrobe for lovely new items.
