Collegiate parents to make their case at education board meeting

REPRESENTATIVES from Portora, Collegiate and Devenish College will attend the monthly meeting of the Western Education and Library Board tomorrow (Thursday) to press their individual educational interests.

A deputation of parents from the Collegiate will attend the meeting to argue the case against the proposed amalgamation of Portora and the Collegiate.

Over the past months parents have openly voiced their discontent at the amalgamation, with matters coming to a head at a heated six and  half hour consultation meeting with WELB officials  over three weeks ago.

The meeting tomorrow, which starts at 2pm is scheduled to hear from the Collegiate delegation at 2.30pm.

This will be followed by a deputation from the board of governors at Devenish College.

Devenish was promised a new school build based on the Tempo Road site in Enniskillen back in 2005, but as yet no building work has commenced.

Back in March though the WELB backed the economic appraisal for a new build and an 800 pupil school based on the Tempo Road.

The Devenish contingent is scheduled to be heard at 2.50pm. Then at 3.10pm the meeting will hear from a board of governors deputation from Portora Royal School.

Portora have always favoured an amalgamation with the Collegiate, with principal Neil Morton previously stating an amalgamation allows for the growth of a non-grammar school with the consequent increase in resources and opportunities available to all children.

The meeting is to be held at the Western Education and Library Board’s headquarters in Omagh.
