If you remember back to the beginning of January I decided like many others across Fermanagh to take my new year’s resolutions seriously this time.
I have decided that in some way (I am not sure how yet) 2014 will be my year so in order to get things done I decided to take control. My new year’s resolution was to try to get fit and at the same time become more energetic and positive about things.
In January I joined ‘Fit Club’ and I haven’t looked back since. Two months on I am sticking to my resolutions, feeling a lot more energetic and taking a more positive outlook on life. One thing I really noticed (as I always do) is the different outfits and training gear that people wear to the gym and ‘Fit Club’. To me gym gear was always just gym gear, plain, unflattering and something I wouldn’t bother spending much money on.
It wasn’t until I started looking around me that I really began to feel ‘unfashionable’ and this was a first for me particularly when I realised that my tired grubby 10 year old trainers were beginning to walk out of the room without me. I never really looked at gym gear as a fashion item before until I started to take notice of the effort everyone else was making and how trainers could actually be enviable.
It really got me thinking about how women in Fermanagh view fashion. Some like me would never consider spending money on a pair of trainers, trackie bottoms and ‘breathable’ t-shirts because quite frankly until now I never really needed them and I never thought I would be bothered about having the latest up to date gym gear. Until I actually started to feel out of place amongst the super fit for the first time I started to view sports gear as a fashion item and realised that you can actually look trendy. Of course me being me I couldn’t go and get what everyone else was wearing so I decided to do a little research into some cool sports brands.
Although the majority of people in my class wear Nike Trainers I decided to be a bit adventurous and go for Adidas. I have always liked Adidas and believe despite it being a sports brand it is incredibly innovative and fashion forward.
Adidas has over the years collaborated with designers such as Yohji Yamamoto, Jeremy Scott and Stella McCartney and with trendy brands such as Kanye West and Topshop so I feel that Adidas ticks all the right boxes for me.
It wasn’t until I started to buy myself some new sports gear and actually got quite excited about it (I never thought I would say that) that I began to realised how expensive it was. Much more expensive than my usual shopping sprees so I won’t be going mad too often! It wasn’t until I joined ‘Fit Club’ and got out amongst sporty Fermanagh women that I realised just how trendy sportswear could be.
