A Lithuanian man crashed into another car because he was tired after a fishing trip, Enniskillen Magistrates Court heard this week.
Alvydas Kelpsas (46) of O’Neill Park, Clones appeared by videolink from Maghaberry Prison on Monday charged with careless driving and having no insurance.
The court was told that police were called to a traffic collison at Main Street in Lisnaskea at 4.20pm on August 14th involving a Volkswagen Bora and a VW Touran. Police spoke to Kelpsas who had been driving the Touran and the male driver of the Bora who appeared to be in pain and indicating injury to his left ankle.
Officers discovered that the defendant had not been insured to drive the vehicle and was arrested along with the driver for pemitting no insurance. When questioned, Kelpsas told police that he and his friends had been fishing and that the owner of the vehicle he was driving had been drinking and was in the back of the vehicle.
He explained to police that he knew he didn’t have insurance. He said that he had been tired when the collision occured at a roundabout when he veered off the white line and hit the other car.
Representing himself and speaking through an interpreter, Kelpsas told the court: “I regret driving without insurance and undertake not to do this again in the future”.
District Judge Nigel Broderick heard that Kelpsas was married with two children and has been living in Ireland for six years.
Kelpsas was fined a total of £500 and banned from driving for 12 months and was told that he would be released from custody upon payment of the fine.
