FINES totalling £300 were handed down to a man whose car went on fire in a supermarket car park.
Police were called to Asda in Enniskillen on December 14th to a report of a vehicle on fire. When they spoke to the vehicle owner Matthew Blackledge, they discovered that he had no driving licence or insurance. The vehicle was confiscated by police.
Blackledge (29) of Algeo Drive in Enniskillen was charged with no driving licence and driving without insurance.
Representing himself, Blackledge told the court that he had no insurance as his licence had previously been revoked for medical reasons. The defendant said he had re-applied for his licence and believed that he was still able to drive.
Blackledge said the vehicle involved in the incident had been “sitting up for a while” and the fire had started after he tried to jumpstart it.
District Judge Nigel Broderick imposed a £100 fine for having no driving licence and £200 for no insurance. Blackledge was also disqualified from driving for six months.
