SINCE taking over as the Fermanagh Rose, Mairead McHugh has been doing her best to represent her county and her chosen charity, Stroke Association Northern Ireland.
To raise funds for the charity, the Rose has organised a dance in the Roches Bar, Kinawley this Saturday, July 30th. On the night there will be entertainment and a raffle with local businesses generously sponsoring a number of different prizes.
“This is my biggest event so far and it has received a good reaction. I have been going around asking for raffle prizes from local businesses and honestly the support has been unbelievable. So far the organising has gone smoothly with no hiccups. I am really looking forward to it, Tommy Owens is playing so there is no doubt we will all be entertained.” said Fermanagh Rose, Mairead McHugh.
All proceeds from the dance go towards raising money for Stroke Association Northern Ireland. Mairead, who works as a speech and language therapist, is hoping that the money raised will go towards the services available in Fermanagh for victims of strokes.
“Since I have been in partnership with the charity, I have met with representatives and explained what I was hoping to achieve. I want to raise money for the Fermanagh services and to help advance the services which are already in place here. We already have a very active group in place in the county so it would be great to get further support for that.”
Dedicated to the cause, the Fermanagh Rose also held an information day at the Erneside Shopping centre on July 17th. Mairead spent the day raising awareness of the risks of people of all ages having a stroke.
“I wanted to raise awareness and to give an insight into the risks of a stroke and how it isn’t just a risk for older people but in young people too.”
The Fermanagh Rose is currently preparing for the Rose of Tralee International Festival which takes place on August 17th until the 23rd.
“I really am loving my experience of being the Fermanagh Rose. It has been a fantastic experience, and I have met most of the other Roses so I am looking forward to the festival.”
