The people of Fermanagh may get a second chance to show their desire to remain in the European Union, with the possibility of a second referendum now to be debated in the House of Commons.
Thousands of unhappy “Remain” campaigners demanding a second referendum crashed the Government’s parliament.uk website twice this morning, with the site failing to cope with the huge volume of traffic. The petition has already garnered over the 100,000 votes, meaning it must be now be considered for debate in Parliament.
This morning, voters in the UK woke up to the news that the Leave campaign have won the EU referendum. In Fermanagh South Tyrone, which had the highest voter turnout in the North, the electorate declared their desire to stay, with a vote of 28,200 to 19,958 in favour of remain.
The referendum was a close call with the Leave campaign coming out on top with 51.9% of the vote.
The campaign states that: “We the undersigned call upon HM Government to implement a rule that if the remain or leave vote is less than 60% based a turnout less than 75% there should be another referendum.”
