ANOTHER local shopper has come forward to highlight the threat of new parking fines imposed by private companies in Enniskillen after being hit with a £90 ticket.

The elderly man, who did not wish to be named, was caught out last month when he nipped out to buy his weekly copy of the Fermanagh Herald and a pint of milk at the 24 hour shop in Enniskillen.

He says his vehicle was detected on CCTV at 12.03am on Wednesday, March 23rd entering the parking area at Queen Street and not exiting again it again until 3.55pm that afternoon. Exactly a week later he received a parking charge notice complete with a photograph of his vehicle, dates and times to the second appearing to show him entering and exiting the car park.

“I did enter the area at midnight but left immediately afterwards. I went in to town again later that afternoon to get the paper and a pint of milk and parked in the same spot yet the cameras have mysteriously failed to show this,” he said.

The pensioner is appealing the fine and has written to the private company marshalling the area, ‘Smart Parking’, urging them to re-check their cameras.

“I’ve been left wondering how these cameras could possibly think that it takes over 14 hours to buy a pint of milk and a newspaper and only £90 to park. It’s the most expensive grocery shop I’ve ever had for my weekly paper. I find it all unacceptable and it has caused me considerable distress and worry.”

The new parking restrictions at Queen Street have left many frustrated and this is just the latest incident of a local resident receiving a £90 fine through the post.

Shoppers now face a limited stay of 30 minutes at the spot and this rule applies 24 hours a day, Monday to Sunday.
Last week this newspaper highlighted the plight of a local woman who in total stayed 45 minutes, just 15 minutes over the specified time, landing her with the £90 fine.

At the time of going to press Smart Parking had not responded to a request for comment from the Herald on either of these incidents.
