AN ENNISKILLEN man has been jailed for trashing a guesthouse he was staying in.
Police who were called to a report of an incident at a Cookstown guesthouse on October 12 last year, discovered extensive damage had been caused by a resident.
The television had been pulled from the wall and was located hidden under a pile of sheets.
The bedclothes were strewn about the room, while a table lamp had been pulled from its fittings and broken.
A picture was found with the frame and glass smashed.
The resident, Dominic John McGoldrick (28) from Woodview, Enniskillen was not present but police located him a short time later. He admitted the charge at his first appearance before East Tyrone Magistrates Court and pre-sentence reports were prepared.
A defence barrister informed the court his client had paid for the damage he caused in full, adding the offence and all before on record were down to an addiction to alcohol.
But District Judge John Meehan remarked, “The defendant is not before the courts due to addictions. He is here for the violence he inflicts on other people and property.”
He continued, “The courts have over the years made manifest efforts to deal with him without prison, but he just will not desist from violence.”
McGoldrick was noted to have been given a suspended sentence in June 2015 for assaulting a police officer then committed the criminal damage offence the following January.
Judge Meehan said, “This was the trashing of a guesthouse. The court has to look at how many people have been affected by his violence. He has shown while in the community he cannot remain sober.”
McGoldrick was jailed for two months and the suspended sentence was activated making a combined total of five months in prison.
