Concerns have been raised as two Enniskillen Churches have had money stolen within a short period of time.
It has emerged that a sum of money was stolen from St Macartin’s Cathedral, Enniskillen in November. The perpetrator of the theft appeared in the vestry after an event held at the Cathedral and stole a sum of money while the collection was being counted. The theft was addressed at the Sunday service last weekend and left members of the congregation shocked.
A spokesman from the Cathedral has expressed his disappointment in the theft and has warned others to be vigilant.
“Other churches should be extra vigilant when handling money in church premises which are accessible to the public, especially after services or other public events.”
Similarly, £2,000 was stolen from St Michael’s Church’s Parish Centre, on Thursday December 1st. It is believed, the raiders gained access to the building via the adjoining church before making off with two money boxes containing a large sum of cash.
Councillor Keith Elliott, has found the incidents distressing and has condemned the actions of the thieves.
“It is very worrying as this has been the second theft of a church building within the last couple of weeks. It was quite a brazen act, and they carried out the theft so openly.
I would advise that when people are dealing with money in churches, please be vigilant, and to have someone with them to prevent similar thefts. If anyone has information about this, pass it on to the Police.
This is very disheartening, a theft of any kind is wrong, but I do not think that anyone could stoop as low as to steal from a church. The way this theft at the Cathedral was carried it out is very worrying.”
Anyone with any information about either of these incidents should contact Enniskillen Police Station on the non emergency number 101 or via Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
