A NEW Year appeal by a local animal sanctuary has paid off for two lucky puppies who are settling into their new home in Enniskillen.
Adorable labrador-collie cross pups, Abby and Jess, melted hearts when they appeared in the Fermanagh Herald just last month. They had been cared for by the dedicated volunteers at Bright Eyes Animal Sanctuary in Ballinamallard since being rescued from the pound.
The four month olds were some of the many animals looking for a loving family to adopt them and thankfully luck was on their side.
Writer, former solicitor and Green Party member, Tanya Jones and her husband Martin are now the proud new owners of Abby and Jess, who moved in at the weekend.
The couple have rescued a number of abandoned animals in the past and lost their beloved border terrier Robbie in December. Tanya and Martin decided to go and see the pups at Bright Eyes after reading about the unwanted pets looking for loving, new homes in this newspaper:
“Our last dog, Robbie was found wandering outside one of the Belfast hospitals. He was with us for eight years but sadly he died just before Christmas at the age of 16.
“We had been thinking of getting another dog but had planned to wait a while before we would start looking around. When we saw the photo of Abby and Jess in The Herald a few weeks back we decided to go down to Bright Eyes and take them for a walk. We had initially only planned to take one of them but because they are such good friends and so alike, we felt that we couldn’t seperate them.
“Robbie was a rescue dog himself, as was our dear daft Labrador-whippet cross Maisie when we lived in England, so we already knew what wonderful companions and friends they can be. Abby and Jess are completely different, but we’re delighted to be able to give a home to more rescued dogs. They came home to us on Saturday morning and are settling in beautifully although the floor has never been mopped so often. They have a lot of energy and need a lot of walks. Despite being noisy and bositerous, they have a beautiful nature.
“It’s clear from their calm and warm attitude how well they have been cared for by the wonderful people at Bright Eyes. If anyone is thinking about welcoming a pet into their family, do think first about giving a home to a rescued animal,” Tanya added.
