A 25-year-old Enniskillen man accused of assaulting two hospital staff members, damaging hospital equipment and interfering with work at the South West Acute Hospital A&E, has appeared before a preliminary enquiry.
Jason Magerr, of Carnmore Lodge, Cornagrade appeared from custody at Enniskillen Magistrates Court to face the charges. He stands accused that on June 21 he assaulted two members of staff at South West Acute Hospital, believed to be a porter and a nurse.
On the same date it is alleged that Magerr damaged a monitor screen belonging to the hospital and damaged glasses belonging to the nurse.
In the same incident Magerr stands accused that he knowingly interfered with the carrying on of lawful activity at the South West Acute Hospital Accident and Emergency Department.
At a previous court sitting a PSNI constable outlined some of the details of the alleged incident.
The constable explained that Magerr attacked a nurse and a hospital porter at the South West Acute Hospital shortly after he was taken to the Accident & Emergency department for treatment to lacerations on his arm.
The court heard how he grabbed a pair of scissors and caused another laceration beside his injuries.
He then caused another disturbance by assaulting a nurse and hospital porter by punching and kicking them.
It is claimed the porter had to lie hunched on the floor to protect himself.
The nurse told police:
“In all my years working in the hospital I have never seen the likes of it.”
It is further alleged that Magerr then grabbed a pair of glasses from her face and punched her hard on the shoulder and again on to her body.
He then kicked her to the left thigh and she suffered an injury to her hand.
The night porter also claimed he was kicked on the groin.
Magerr then damaged medical equipment and used the debris from this to damage a large monitor screen.
The prosecutor stated there was a case to answer and no contrary submissions were made by the defence barrister Gavin Cairns.
District judge Nigel Broderick said he was satisfied the accused had a prima facie case to answer.
When asked if he wished to say anything to the charges, or give evidence or call any witnesses on his behalf, Magerr replied on each occasion: “No”.
The accused was returned to custody to appear at Dungannon Crown Court on September 22, 2015 for arraignment.
