CELTIC metal band Darkest Era are readying the release of a new album.
The band, which features members from Fermanagh, and was formed in the county, have been working on their follow up to ‘The Last Caress of Light’ which they released in 2011.
The band includes ‘Krum’ Maguire on vocals, Ade Mulgrew on guitar, Sarah Wieghell on guitar, Daniel O’Toole on bass, and Cameron Ahslund-Glass, on drums.
The group have just returned from a show in Scotland, as Ade explained, and their new album ‘Severence’ has a June release date.
“We’ve just returned from headlining ‘North of the Wall’ festival in Glasgow, which was a really wonderful show I have to say. It was our third time playing Glasgow; we’ve established a strong following there which is very encouraging and it’s also a great place to party!
“Aside from these we’ve been rehearsing some new material and preparing a lot for the release of our new album – including shooting a new video which is due out in May.”
Ade described 2013 as a ‘tough’ year for the band, due to line-up alterations, and changing record labels.
He explained: “All these things upset momentum somewhat but it is to be expected really. When you start a band in school at 16 it’s inevitable that things will change shape along the way, especially when you start to go off on tours, experience outside pressures, essentially working as professional musicians but with none of the remuneration.
“I would say the band has entered a new phase now, the strongest we’ve ever been and things are rapidly picking up speed.
“We live and breathe our art and we’re very excited about what lies ahead for us.”
The new album was recorded last year in Kerry with Chris Fielding, who also produced the band’s debut album.
“The album is a product of circumstances in a way. It was recorded during stormy times for the band, in a literally stormy Atlantic facing location and I think there is a darkness and aggression underpinning the songs because of this.
“Some of the best songs we’ve ever written are on this album and I guess it broadens both ends of our spectrum of influence. There are more Thin Lizzy style harmonies, big choruses and riffs than ever before; but at the same time it is faster, more aggressive and in places more sorrowful than before. We’re very proud of it.”
The album is to be released world-wide via Cruz Del Sur Records on June 13 on CD and gatefold LP. In support of the album the band will be out on tour around the UK and Ireland again this Autumn.
