Eamon Maguire was down to start at right corner forward on Sunday but with work in England the St Pat’s Donagh man was unable to get home for the game.
His late replacement Eddie Courtney made the most of his opportunity hitting four points from play in an highly impressive first start for the county seniors;
“I’m just glad to be there. It was unfortunate, Eamon was supposed to be in there before me but he couldn’t get home from work so I suppose you have to make the most of every opportunity when you are fighting for a place,” Courtney explained after the game.
And the Aghadrumsee man explained that as far as the team was concerned avoiding relegation was the only objective on Sunday.
“It was a big game and it was very important to get the win. We really didn’t want to get relegated to division four so the win and getting over the line was all that mattered whether that was by a point or by eight or nine as it was in the end.”
Speaking on his own performance Courtney is all ready showing the maturity needed for this level of football and refuses to get carried away.
“Of course I’m happy surely but you could go out next week and not get a sniff of it so you have to make the most of it when you get your chance because it is just not that easy nailing a place down on the team.”
Courtney was part of a prolific full forward line that hit 1-11 between them as they tore the Wexford defence apart. Tomas Corrigan hit 0-07 while at full forward Barry Owens scored a goal. And Courtney enjoyed the opportunity of playing with the two time All Star.
“You know when the ball goes in Barry won’t be far from winning it. He will break it down to you or win it clean and he set up a few scores today and of course he got the goal with the flick early on,” the former MacRory Cup winner said.
Focus now for the Fermanagh team turns towards their last league game and then the run in to the championship and Courtney reports that there is a really good buzz at training at present.
“Training is going well. The boys are really stepping up and we are trying to raise the bar every week. We have one more league game now and after that it is all about getting the heads down and putting in some hard work for the Antrim game in the championship.”
And looking ahead to that championship clash Courtney and Fermanagh are keen to make it as difficult as possible for Antrim when they come to Brewster Park.
“Some of the boys were saying it earlier on in the week, this is our place and anyone coming here wants to be thinking that they are coming into the lions den and that they are not going to get out of it handy, We want to make it a habit winning at home. No team should come in here and roll us over so it is important next week that we get another win.”
