It was revealed at Monday nights Fermanagh County Board meeting that six names had been put forward for the job of Fermanagh county manager. However none of these names are to be made public.
The decision to remain tight lipped is consistent with how the Fermanagh County Executive normally appoint their managers however it was revealed to the meeting that interviews for the position were to start next week.
It is not clear whether any of the names in the hat were nominated by the clubs of the county or if they are all nominees of the county executive.
Fermanagh and Antrim remain the only two teams in Ulster without a manager and the pair will meet in the championship in June of next year at Brewster Park.
At this stage it is still pure speculation as to who is in for the top job in the Erne. Kevin McStay, Peter McGinnity, Dom Corrigan, Rory Gallagher and Gearoid Adams have all be linked with the vacant position. Another name to join the rumour mill was Frank Dawson of Down. This is an intriguing prospect given Dawson stepped down as Antrim manager just a few weeks ago and after receiving the backing of the Antrim County Board.
He has shown an interest in the position of Fermanagh manager in the past and should what some people are saying will come to pass and he get the job then it would add spice to that championship encounter next year.
There was no significant discussion on the managerial appointment although there is understood to be concern over the lateness of the appointment. Indeed the Fermanagh County Executive told this paper in the wake of Peter Canavan’s resignation that they wanted a man in position sooner rather than later to avoid a repeat of what happened in 2011 when Canavan took over. But it seems it will be mid to late October at the earliest before a manager is in place.
