Ballinamallard United….1
Crusaders…..0
An early Andy Crawford goal gave Ballinamallard all three points in the opening day fixture at Ferney Park.
The home side were full value for their victory creating numerous chances and for most parts outplaying their more illustrious opponents.
A good start was rewarded on 13 minutes when Crawford latched on to Steve Feeney’s header and sent a flashing shot into the bottom corner. It could have been even better had Ryan Campbell converted two good chances, but the Mallards were reminded of the visitor’s threat when Paul Heatley’s effort hit a post.
Further good chances for Crawford and Campbell could have put the game out of sight, but they would enter the half just the one goal to the good.
The best opening in the second half fell to David Kee, but the midfielder’s shot was kept out by Lacrois.
The game would end on a sour note as goal scorer Crawford and Coates from Crusaders were dismissed for an off-the-ball tussle, a harsh decision on Crawford, who had been lively throughout.
Despite the setback Ballinamallard ensured a victorious start to their second season in the top flight.
