Fermanagh and Omagh Council recruits new refuse staff

NEW “additional seasonal staff” have been recruited by the Council as their household refuse team continues to struggle to cope with the demand on its services.

Fermanagh residents have been left fuming for months after numerous reports of brown food waste bins going uncollected, with the Council saying they “sincerely apologise” for the delay.

The Council has recently revealed to the Herald that they’ve expanded their workforce staff in order to try and deal with the ever-increasing demand on their refuse services.

“Fermanagh and Omagh District Council has recently appointed additional seasonal staff to support household refuse collection and is progressing recruitment processes for a number of additional driver and general operative posts, all of which are intended to support better service resilience and reliability for residents and ratepayers,” a Council spokesperson told the Herald.

“The Council’s Refuse team monitor services, and work closely with colleagues across the Council, on a daily basis to safeguard service delivery and minimise the risk of missed collections.

“The Council remains committed to providing a weekly household refuse collection service that supports increased quality and quantities of recycling.”

With residents around the county left fuming that their brown food waste bins were left uncollected, the Council previously confirmed that staff shortages was one of the reasons for the delay.

“When we do not have the required staff resource available to us, priority is given to the collection of black and green residual bins,” the Council said.

“Unfortunately, this results in an interruption to the collection of brown food waste caddies on some routes on occasion.

“We recognise the inconvenience and frustration felt by those impacted and make every effort to redeploy staff, where possible, to service caddies that have not been collected on two consecutive occasions.”

Brown bins were introduced in Fermanagh in April 2015, with the county following the likes of other Council areas in a bid to improve waste disposal.

Due to the ongoing lack of food waste bin collections, the Council also said that “extra waste can be taken to Drummee or Lisnaskea Recycling Centres”.
