THE latest post-primary school league tables have revealed stark contrasts in exam results among Fermanagh’s Catholic grammar and secondary schools.

While two secondary schools have produced the best GCSE exam results in the North and now command the top two spots, another two grammar schools are bottom of the league when it comes to student performance at A-level.

St Eugene’s College in Roslea had just 20 pupils sitting GCSEs last year but have topped the latest schools league table with 85% of pupils achieveing five or more exams at A* to C level.

Despite falling student numbers at the school, staff and pupils have worked hard over the past two years to improve their grades – two years ago only 24% of students were achieveing these high marks.

St Comhghall’s in Lisnaskea, which is joining up with St Eugene’s to form a new 650 pupil school later this year, remain in second place as 60 Year 12 pupils sat GCSE’s in 2015 with 85% achieving top marks.

The two schools are among four second level institutions in Fermanagh that made the top 30 which also included St Mary’s,  Brollagh (10) and St Mary’s in Irvinestown (28).

In terms of exam performances at A-level across the North’s grammar schools last year, there was bad news, however, for two of Enniskillen’s biggest colleges. St Michael’s came bottom of the list at 64th position just two places behind Mount Lourdes. Both schools returned top mark rates of just over 60%.

Another school set to close its doors at the end of the current school year was the only one featured in the top 30. Portora, soon be replaced by the new co-educational Enniskillen Royal, came in at number 17 for the best A-level results. The percentage of pupils in their final year gaining three or more A-levels at grades A* to C was 82%. The school it’s set to join up with, the Collegiate, was placed at number 40 with a 73% of students earning top marks.
