THE ROUND O in Enniskillen could be set for a radical name change if the council agrees to a request from the  Fermanagh Council of Trade Unions.

The Fermanagh and Omagh District Council has received a request from the group to rename the current Brook Park, known locally as the Round O to ‘Jim Brown – Workers Memorial Park’. Mr Brown, who died in 2003, was the former chairman of the Fermanagh Council of Trades and Branch Secretary in the Local Transport and General Workers Union (Now Unite the Union).

The correspondence further states: That the park is used for the annual Workers Memorial Day  (WMD) ceremony which each year remembers workers who have lost their lives in the course of their employment.

There are also stipulations that the role trade unionists and the wider labour movement in the county have made towards fairness at work and equality and peace in the wider community be recognised and that the upcoming 100th anniversary of the founding of the  Fermanagh Council of Trades Unions in 2019 be acknowledged. Enniskillen Trades and Labour Council was founded in 1919 and was the forerunner of Trades Unionism in County Fermanagh dating back to at least 1834.

The final condition included in the correspondence is that the role the late Jim Brown, the former chairman of the Fermanagh Council of Trades and Branch Secretary in the Local Transport and General Workers Union (now Unite the Union) (1950 to 2003) is recognised, including the part he played in ‘assisting local workers and combating sectarianism over 50 years of his life following his wounding twice in action during the 1939-45 struggle against fascism’.

The correspondence is to be brought to tonight’s meeting of the Policy and Resources Committee to held in Enniskillen Townhall at 7pm.
